Do I need a permit for a temporary wall in NYC?

Are freestanding walls landlord-approved?
Yes, by design. They are freestanding and classified as furniture — the same category as a bookshelf or wardrobe — so they do not modify the apartment. Every lease is different, so check unusual clauses, but you are placing furniture, not building a wall.
What does “classified as furniture” actually mean?
It means the divider stands on its own and never attaches to the floor, ceiling, or structural walls. Because it does not become part of the building, it is treated as a movable object rather than construction — which is what keeps permits, fire-code questions, and move-out repairs out of the picture.

Will a freestanding wall damage my apartment?
